How much resolution do you need for photo enlargements? Is my file good enough to print that big?
These are questions we get a lot and can be tricky questions. If we go “by the numbers” you want a minimum of 150 dpi (200 to 300 dpi is better) to produce good photographic results. Some examples:
A 2 megapixel camera makes an image with 1200 pixels by 1600 pixels if we divide 1200 pixels by 150 dpi we get 8 inch, if we divide 1600 pixels by 150 dpi we get 10.6 inches. That means from a 2 megapixel camera we can print 8 x 10.
See the chart below for some other common camera resolutions.
2 megapixels = 1200 by 1600 pixels = 8 by 10 inches
3 megapixels = 1536 by 2048 pixels = 10 by 14 inches
6 megapixels = 2400 by 3000 pixels = 16 by 20 inches
10 megapixels = 2592 by 3872 pixels = 17.25 by 26 inches
12 megapixels = 2912 by 4368 pixels = 20 by 30 inches
If you have a good quality digital file we can often push it bigger than what “the numbers” indicate – sometimes by up to 25%. We won’t know for sure until we see the image and try it.
There are also other factors that can effect the quality and size you can achieve from a file such as:
How good the camera and lens are – most brand name cameras have decent lens and conversion algorithms. However, pictures taken on an older cell phone with a small lens and poor software might not look great even at a small size.
